II.2.2. Social isolation

Social isolation is also one of the key factors of vulnerability to heat waves: people living alone, especially, elderly people, sick people who have no social ties are at risk. According to the study by the Institute Medico -legal, 92 % of victims of the 2003 heat wave lived alone, 383 of the victims in Paris lived alone (Poumadere et al., 2005)

The territory of Plaine Comune due to a considerable share of recent immigrants, not adapted and with no social ties is vulnerable to heat waves. Furthermore, the so called for social mixity, not necessarily produces social cohesion and people living in the same newly-built neighborhoods not necessarily are able to build social networks on the new place.

Moreover, nearly a third of household consist of people living alone. This indicator, although provides useful information on population’s sensitivity to heat waves, should be considered with caution, as a share of single person  households corresponds in fact to single but not isolated people, as students, for example (Table 7)
